If there’s one thing we can always count on, it’s Helena May’s effervescent musical prowess. A fierce explorer of anything funk, jazz and soul, the London-based creative has long established a notable personal brand, with a career that has been constantly on the rise. We should know, having written about the “Blue-Eyed Funky Soulstress” a few times already. Gearing up for the summer season, Helena May has recently unveiled her latest effort, ‘Side Effects’, an electrifying blend of British Funk and Soul with a modern twist and catchy, playful lyricism.
We have no notes; ‘Side Effects’ is effortlessly perfect, a slice of eclectic exuberance and infectious positivity in an overly gloomy world. May’s vocals are smooth as silk, yet also bold and epic, sharing a keen acid jazz character that’s a joy to listen to. Featuring a live bass and a charming horn section, ‘Side Effects’ took shape in Vienna at Sheep Hill Studios, with Fabian Wollner accompanying May on her creative quest. Safe to say, the mission was accomplished!
Describing the record as her “next chapter of nu-school funkiness”, Helena appears firmly committed to her artistic vision, a vision that we have subscribed to a long time ago. It looks as though people are responding all over Europe too; just a matter of time till May transforms into an international phenomenon.
