‘Antipop Star’ is certainly one of the most unique releases we have come across recently. Also, one of the more creative. Born out of the collaboration between the pixel-art cyberpunk world of X-RL7, created by Mike Evans, and LA alt-rock band AL1CE, the piece takes the shape of an eclectic four-minute alt-rock anthem and a striking, playful web episode, continuing X-RL7 saga, ‘Episode 28: Miss Clio’.
It is the perfect match between music prowess and visual euphoria, weaving into pop culture, leftfield genres and everything in between. Frankly, we are not sure the audience is ready for it, yet we’ll try our best to convey the urgency of watching and listening to the track and the web episode in its entirety. From a sonic standpoint, ‘Antipop Star’ is haunting yet evocative, further blessed by vocalist Natasha Cox’s stunning tone.
Regarding Episode 28, we are told: “It takes viewers inside a televised birthday event for a pop icon with a sinister twist. The episode weaves red carpet drama, live performances, and biting social commentary on the entertainment industry and celebrity culture. Featuring guest voice appearances from YouTube musician Todd Barriage, renowned for his viral ‘emo’ covers.”
