The Rolling People: “The attachment to songs is something that we leave to the listeners”

Manchester-based indie rockers The Rolling People were recently labelled as “Manchester’s next great success”. It’s a pretty serious tag to attach to such a young and upcoming band, but once you’ve heard their music, you’ll completely understand the marker. Raw, energetic, and with a youthful exuberance, the act is poised to make serious waves in the indie rock scene.

Desperate to get to know the talented lads a bit better, we were stoked when the band agreed to an interview! Chatting with us about their cracking new single ‘I’ll Be There’, some of the musicians and acts that they draw influence from, and what they have next up their musical sleeves, please give a big welcome to our new friends The Rolling People!

Welcome aboard The Rolling People! I can’t wait to introduce you to our ever-expanding audience! How did the four of you meet and was it love at first jam?

We’d known each other at school but had only started the band a couple of years later. We could definitely tell it was going to work between us from the get-go! Everything seemed so effortless.

‘I’ll Be There’ has been on serious repeat in my flat! It’s just such a classic rock anthem – something I’ve clearly been craving recently! How proud are you of your latest single and what does the tune mean to you?

We’ve definitely seen it as another step up from what we’ve been writing previously but the attachment to songs we leave to the listeners.

I’ve also taken pretty strongly to ‘Grateful for Nothing’. You guys have such an authentic and honest sound! What can you tell our readers about the track?

It’s another song that came about quickly – starting from a couple of guitar chords and building up from there really. We’d had that song for a while before we decided it was the right time to record it.

Who would you put down as some of your biggest musical influences and who would you ultimately credit for helping shape and mould your overall sound?

People like Paul Weller, Pearl Jam and The Verve are a couple of names that have helped influence us but there definitely isn’t one band or artist that we owe our sound to.

Which of your lyrics would you like to see printed on a T-shirt?

Maybe “That perfect life you’re tryna find is a lie within your mind” from ‘Disguise’.

Could you tell us a bit about your songwriting process? Not specifically for any song but just in general. How do you take an idea and turn it into a piece of music?

An idea for a song can come from any one of us and then we’ll work on the spot to get it as close to a finished product as possible. We trust our instincts – and that our first move when writing is going to be right.

If you were allowed to collaborate with any musician or band, who would you choose?

A collab with UNKLE would be something different and not what we’re used to so it would be interesting, to say the least.

Thanks again for chatting with us guys! It’s been great getting to know you a bit better. Before we let you go, what comes next for the project?

We’ve got an EP on the horizon which we’re looking forward to releasing and seeing what our fans think of it. There’s been a lot of effort put into it and we’re really proud of the complete record.
