The Revelator Reflect on Failing Relationships in ‘Gaslighter’

There’s a stunning aura of simplicity in The Revelator’s latest effort, ‘Gaslighter’. Although one should be aware – it is mostly on the surface, conveyed in the gentle and mellow arrangements, making the songs a relatable and easily digestible gem. On a deeper level, there’s more complexity to be analysed: how can their songwriting be so immediate, so introspective yet also so informative? That’s where The Revelator really shines. A talented duo from San Francisco, they could be defined as sonic and lyrical explorers, usually at home in kaleidoscopic settings, balanced between indie, folk and a certain pop flair.

Returning with a string of releases this year, The Revelator now unveil ‘Gaslighter’, a placid fragment of humanity, as we like to define it. In it, the American outfit shares a message of honesty and self-awareness, especially related to a failing relationship, where often people might have a hard time letting things go.

The song reflects on ill-fated attempts to save a relationship, bordering towards manipulation and gaslighting. As the group explains: “For many bands the chorus “Who will love you like I do?” would be played for sympathy, but in ‘Gaslighter’ it becomes proof the narrator can’t be trusted.”

The record also marks The Revelator’s upcoming album, ‘Removing a Heart is More Art Than Science’, expected later this year.
