Marking Talon David’s first release of the year, ‘Paradise State of Mind’ reveals a dreamy, positive listening experience, a slice of hopeful brightness in an otherwise gloomy, dark reality. Both the lyrical and sonic layers work towards that shared goal, with David’s luscious, elegant vocals sat atop a functional pop arrangement, one that leaves ample space for Talon’s hazy, melodious tone. Honestly, it’s a simple record, but one that works very well in delivering fun aural escapism.
Originally from the US and now based in the UK, Talon David has been producing and recording the track herself, showcasing her keen artistic flair. The final result is quite impressive, and while its DIY nature can be quickly perceived, that doesn’t hinder the uplifting and evocative energy the song has to offer. In fact, it makes it even more personal and authentic, a quality that’s rather precious these days. As an easter egg, David uses a baritone ukulele, giving the overall record a veiled tropical character.
Delving deeper into the inspiration behind ‘Paradise State of Mind’, Talon explains: “I wrote Paradise State of Mind during COVID, as I muscled through my shift at the Barista Parlour in the Nashville International airport. My need to travel was overwhelming, so I crafted this song to be a tad of a lifeline for tackling restlessness until we could travel again. Five years later, I live abroad and still struggle with restlessness. It seemed like the perfect time to share this relentlessly upbeat tune.”
