Part fierce, part decadent, ‘The Fool’ is quite a monumental and crucial body of work. The latest effort by Tokyo-based creative Sarina, the EP collects everything the project has built so far, and wraps it into a forward-thinking, yet familiar pop-punk livery, constantly oscillating between pop-lenient elegance and relentless guitar-driven melancholy. You’ve also got your fairy, cinematic moments, as ‘Race with no end’ clearly displays.
It is an eclectic record, yet we feel as though we get the best of Sarina in tracks such as the opener, ‘Toast to the Broken’. Blinking an eye to early ‘2000s Avril Lavigne-esque influences, the song feels hard-hitting and potent, also unleashing Sarina’s intense and dynamic vocal tone. Overall, there’s a common lyrical theme in the EP, tying it all together. Navigating identity and its many layers, the rising artist writes about being unapologetically herself, walking the fine line between uplifting positivity and gloomy melancholy.
Out now via Sarina’s own record label SyrenSong, ‘The Fool’ is a wonderfully nuanced record, one that needs time and focus to be fully appreciated. It’s also striking and bold, an EP that doesn’t ask for permission, instead making its way to the listener’s hearts undetected. It also features a world-class creative team, consisting of producer Kevin Thrasher (Panic! At The Disco, Blink-182, MGK) and Grammy-nominated mastering engineer Maor Appelbaum (Dream Theater, Sepultura, Rob Halford).
