The keen reader might remember Seattle-based singer-songwriter Sarah Brunner from a feature we published earlier this year, celebrating ‘Something Else’ as “a heartwarming and nostalgic piece that explores a crucial topic”. We stand by our words; in fact, such a statement could also be used to describe the overall artistry behind Brunner’s project. Crafting meaningful material drenched in purpose, personal experience and a fierce Queer ethos, the American creative offers listeners something to reflect upon, as well as catchy lyrics to sing out loud.
‘Miss Kentucky’ is the latest evidence of that. Sarah’s latest single, the piece further advances the triumphant journey towards her upcoming EP, expected on August 7th. Judging by ‘Miss Kentucky’, we can expect a stream of wholesome and evocative Americana woven into eclectic folk elements. Brunner’s vocals resonate with anthemic energy, as per usual, catching the listener’s attention since the first note.
From a lyrical standpoint, ‘Miss Kentucky’ takes a hard look at the questionable action of infamous former Kentucky county clerk Kim Davis, who petitioned the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn Obergefell v. Hodges, the landmark case that legalised same-sex marriage in the United States. Brunner highlights how we must resist such retrograde narratives. As she explains: “The song is about the freedom to love and to be married and the importance of continuing the fight to preserve marriage equality. It is dedicated to the LGBTQ+ people who paved the way and serves as a reminder that the fight for equality is not over.”
