Here’s something that people rarely talk about: the music industry is packed with very talented, yet hidden individuals, figures that didn’t quite enter the spotlight, but that would have certainly deserved it. Alongside all the flashy names, the main stars, there’s an army of gifted creatives that didn’t make it – in a conventional sense – but that still came very close to it. Sandy Kilpatrick fits the mold – from opening for Muse at The Roadhouse in 1999, to further developing his career in Portugal, he’s been a vivid part of contemporary culture, oscillating just below the big league.
It’s perhaps hard to understand why such a musical savant did not break through to mainstream popularity. We could blame the eternal and often random roulette of the arts industry. What we can certainly do, though, is take a deeper look at who Kilpatrick is today, starting with his latest release, ‘The Spark’. Following up on last year’s ‘Mesmerized’, the song navigates nostalgic, emotional lyricism with unheard mastery, showcasing all the songwriting depth the British troubadour has to offer.
From a sonic standpoint, ‘The Spark’ feels as soothing and elegant as it could, despite carrying a wholesome and meaningful character. Such character becomes rather hypnotising thanks to the dynamic orchestral strings found on the record, courtesy of Aurora Miranda. It’s a blissful, rewarding listening experience, one that’s facilitated by Sandy’s frequent collaborators André Silvestre and João Robim.
Kilpatrick’s musical career is about to reach the 25-year milestone in April. As mentioned above, he’s a majestic artistic personality who has now transformed into a hidden treasure.
