Marking Robyn Maddox’s comeback after a two-year hiatus, ‘Margot’ showcases the great deal of artistic growth endured by the Belfast-based songstress. Now embracing a more contemporary and eclectic synth-pop path, Maddox maintains the gloomy and introspective lyrical depth she’s been known for. A fiery explorer of human nature and its contradictions, Robyn delves into the dark sides of attraction, describing how infatuation and envy can often shift into more troublesome territories.
Produced by Darragh Tibbs and featuring fellow musicians David Dalzell (bass) and Marcus Porte (guitar), ‘Margot’ was namely inspired by “the glamourisation of mobster culture in cinema and littered with imagery of French film noir”, a combo that result into Maddox’s intricate lyricism, somber yet wrapped into a sense of whimsical and slightly playful, putting elegant malevolence on a pedestal.
“An ode to infatuation at its most gruesome” – continues the Northern Irish creative. Overall, we are heavily impressed by ‘Margot’. Buoyant on the surface and murky at its core, the record reveals a well-thought-out artistic personality, a sign that Maddox is not pursuing trends and temporary fads, instead focusing on her pure, unfiltered musical self.
