There’s a great deal of sensibility and expertise in ‘Friends with a Fool’. Dealings with the often incomprehensible choices made by friends and family, the song explores the difficulty of understanding others’ behaviours, and the wrong path one can be led into by third-party interests, whether romantic, professional, or merely by disinformed actors. Penned by British troubadour DrewJam, the record is vivid, vibrant and rather cathartic.
From a sonic standpoint, we are in indie-rock and pop territories, with DrewJam relying on a simple yet effective formula. Lush, fuzzy guitar tones and steady drums: the perfect match for his earthy, raw and slightly jagged vocals. It all works extremely well, with the English talent wrapping the listeners in poignancy and emotional energy, really communicating the personal and introspective tale conveyed by the lyrics.
Completely self-produced, ‘Friends with a Fool’ continues DrewJam’s rising path. Also, there’s a certain early ‘2000s quality in it, something that we surely welcome. Speaking about the inspiration behind the song, DrewJam explains: “It wistfully explores the emotions that many of us face when friends and loved ones are influenced to make choices and take paths, whether because of infatuation, love, a relationship, that we believe are wrong.”
