Night House Unveils Hypnotic and Anthemic Opal ‘Heaven Knows’

Behind its sumptuous aural facade, ‘Heaven Knows’ hides an equally wonderful lyrical ethos, a signal of what Night House stand for. Synths and orchestral elements, all happily joining an anthemic embrace.

‘Heaven Knows’ is one of the most hypnotic and striking records we have heard recently. It employs a compositional structure that’s almost pointillistic: brief clusters of all-band bonanza in-between twirling, chaotic synth lines. Its unapologetic and loud character is clear from the get-go, and in truth, the track does not waste any time. Nick Williams’ vivid, immersive vocals slowly unveil the nuanced lyrical picture, with overarching drum fills and orchestral flashes building up towards a surprisingly tender and malleable chorus.

Hailing from Brighton, Night House are producer and songwriter Nick Williams, cellist Robin Squirrell and double bassist Alfie Weedon. ‘Heaven Knows’ is a pretty loyal example of what the trio stands for, a hybrid of dream-pop euphoria and orchestral lusciousness with a strong introspective flair.

Behind its sumptuous aural facade, ‘Heaven Knows’ hides an equally wonderful lyrical ethos, here focused on emotive reckoning and the challenge of letting go. As Night House explain: “It was written about the moment you realise a relationship has run its course.” Everyone will relate to that: that nagging feeling that tells you something is wrong, that it’s time to move on. And the confusion and painful consequences, the accountability… It’s all translated into sonic forms by the talented British outfit.
