A wonderfully nuanced yet striking effort, ‘Coming Home’ is especially bittersweet. Packed with electrifying guitar tones and metal-esque influences, the track also delves into melancholic melodies and anthemic hooks, with its overall meaning being incredibly profound and steeped in real-life experience. Behind such a potent record, we find New Laconia, a Ukrainian outfit guided by the sapient and talented vision of Alex Syniakov.
Building on the sonic wealth showcased by the group’s previous singles – ‘Fly or Die!’, ‘The Fates’, and ‘Stardust Bear Bazaar, Pt.1’ – ‘Coming Home’ takes the instrumental route, leaving vocals behind and focusing on the band’s guitar prowess. You can say a lot with melodies alone, and that’s exactly what New Laconia does, letting their part-gloomy, part-euphoric aural storytelling reach listeners in a triumph of evocative energy.
Anticipating an upcoming debut album, ‘Coming Home’ is steeped in contemporary imagery; as Syniakov explains: “It tells the story of a Captain returning from a war his side has lost. Defeated and broken, he sets out across the vast cosmos, trying to escape the oppression of the victors and rediscover a reason to live. His journey takes him through stars, planets, and forgotten worlds. Eventually, fate leads him to a mysterious portal that transports him to Stardust — a cosy pub at the edge of the universe, home to fellow wanderers. There, he begins a new chapter of his life.”
