Nevler Unveils Nuanced, Introspective EP ‘A Handful of Moons’

‘A Handful of Moons’ traces an eclectic musical journey that takes listeners into vivid emotional territories, with Nevler shifting from tender introspection to brooding resolutions at a moment’s notice.

We are very intrigued by the heartwarming, elegant artistry Nevler has to offer. Oscillating between orchestral melancholia and folk-like nostalgia, the New York-based songwriter, singer, and musician traces an eclectic musical journey that takes her into lovable, vivid territories, both from a lyrical and sonic standpoint. ‘A Handful of Moons’ is the perfect evidence of that. Marking Nevler’s latest effort, the EP packs four compelling episodes of different shapes and moods, all pointing to the hypnotic and expressive artistry that propels the American songstress.

You see, Nevler is not only a gifted singer, but also a talented violinist, so much so that we are told that she considers the instrument as “an extension of her voice”, certainly an interesting concept. It makes sense if one looks at Nevler’s holistic perspective on music. She’s trying to build a whole universe, a place that’s sonically bold and rewarding, certainly cathartic, but also meaningful and relatable. What more could you wish for? Nevler is not trying to appease trends of mainstream formulas, instead searching for a more authentic musical practice.

It works: ‘A Handful of Moons’ stands out as an emotional roller-coaster, as well as an exercise in cathartic introspection. If ‘Sequoia’ opens the EP in true crepuscular and folk-esque fashion, follow-up ‘Unfair’ then jumps into a darker waltz, one that indulges in electric guitars and organic drums. Nevler’s lyricism follows the shift in mood, recounting the rupturous emotional phases of a long-distance situationship.
