Playfully drawing inspiration from trash metal, as well as neighbouring rock niches, ‘The Beast I’m Meant To Be’ is quite a balanced record. Although its main objective is to sound fierce and hard-hitting, the album still manages to maintain an interesting lyrical outlook and functional melodism, a feature that will go a long way in enticing a wider audience.
Packed with ten eclectic episodes, the record stems from American musician and songwriter Matt Wolejsza. It won’t be a surprise to learn that he’s heavily influenced by Metallica, something that gifts the album hints of nostalgic metal allure. That said, there are contemporary synth add-ons throughout the tracklist, as well as softer ballad moments.
From a lyrical standpoint, ‘The Beast I’m Meant To Be’ serves a very specific purpose, showcasing years of songwriting work and a willingness to practice introspection and artistic expression. As Wolejsza explains: “I started writing songs as a way to express myself as an adult. As I did that, I started looking for classes and meetups to get feedback. That eventually led to the Baltimore songwriter group led by Diana Hanson-Young. The songs on this album are from years of writing. Some are about my experiences and others are about various topics.”
It’s honestly a beautiful story, as we firmly believe that art is our best tool for dealing with and processing an increasingly harsh reality.
