Following up on ‘Kicking The Habit’, Irish Channel-Surf Rock outfit Maicín have returned with a brand new single, a piece that reminds us all about the project’s elegant, eclectic strive and witty imagery. ‘Fear The War’ feels a tad more intimate and acoustic-driven, shying away from the orchestral charge of its predecessor. That said, there’s still a great deal of elegance and spacious cinematic allure in it.
Producer Oli Deakin is on production duties, helping the Irish group rise to the challenge: material that feels meaningful and heartwarming, as well as hard-hitting and epic. From a lyrical standpoint, ‘Fear The War’ grapples with a world that’s slowly sliding towards belligerence and conflict. In that sense, Maicín’s frontman Matt Hurley takes a cue from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, then embarks on reflective songwriting that feels urgent and relatable.
The song is particularly relevant and meaningful, as it approaches a topic that’s likely familiar to everyone. What does it mean to witness war from afar, knowing that, beyond the boredom of our daily, safe lives, horrors unfold with no respite in sight? Delving deeper into the meaningful ethos that propels the record, we are told: “That night Matt was out watching an Everton match and felt a creeping doom. Why should there be people just like him dying for reasons beyond their control while he gets to be safe watching a match he doesn’t care about, drinking overpriced beer?”
