As we submerge ourselves into ‘Dinner at Dorsia’, it’s hard to contain the excitement. The album sounds nostalgic and retro, yet also contemporary and bold. It’s the perfect marriage between old-school honours and forward-thinking imagery. The overall vibe is rather haunting and sombre, with a whopping sixteen tracks showcasing all that LoDeck and The Golden GODZ have to offer. Teaming up on the record, the American pair pens an absolute standout.
LoDeck brings a certain vintage quality to the project, as well as extensive musical wisdom. He’s part of the old guard, so to speak, active since 1997 and through the early ‘2000s. His vocals still carry that unbothered, deep tone one would often hear on hip-hop records back then. The Golden GODZ are instead a production collective based in California, with Sol626 taking the lead on the album.
Delving deeper into the meaningful ethos that propels the record, LoDeck explains: “The album is a reference to American Psycho – as in, Dorsia is an unachievable status symbol, and the killer hides in plain view, because he doesn’t draw attention enough”. We appreciate the observant and witty lyricism featured throughout the album. It feels like a hidden critique of our modern world, yet it never sounds too obvious or plain. LoDeck’s rap expertise shines through particularly.
