Listen to Xoe-B’s Fierce 90’s House Anthem ‘Valentine (You Can’t Have Me)’

You might have heard about Xoe-B, British singer and songwriter with a knack for catchy choruses and inspired songwriting. Originally debuting in 2018, she has been exploring different sonic avenues and artistic directions, always preserving her heartfelt, intense lyricism. Lately, electronic grooves have been their favourites, with the projects navigating disco and electro-pop vibes on ‘Life in Colours’ and ‘Two’s a Crowd’ (remix). Continuing on the theme, the Worthing resident now returns with ‘Valentine (You Can’t Have Me)’, one of the best songs she’s ever written, in our opinion. How could that not be? Bathed in retro 90s classic house feels, the record features fierce, exciting vocals, showcasing Xoe-B’s powerful, evocative tone.

You should treasure the single. It takes you back to a vintage club, three decades ago, while dancing to vocal house anthems (think Robin S or Maddison Avenues). In it, we find all the elements we would expect. Producer Victor Grey provides period-corrected sound matter, including piano and the organ/bass layer made famous by Robin S. Xoe-B instead provides a chorus and a hook that’s made to be sung aloud with friends, while dancing in drunken euphoria. While the record’s aesthetic is playful and innocent, its lyricism is more refined and meaningful, although delivered with charisma and nonchalance.

It is in essence, a celebration of single life. With ‘Valentine (You Can’t Have Me)’, Xoe-B wants to empower listeners in navigating their own ways, instead of following formal obligations induced by society. As she describes it: “Recently I’ve been so fed up with society telling me what my 20s SHOULD look like; to hurry up and find love because family want and wedding and grandkids etc but it’s rare that people ask me what I WANT and that’s been driving me crazy so I put all my frustrations into this track.”
