Pushing Hip-Hop’s Boundaries With Johari Turner

Emerging from Texas, Johari Turner is part of the latest hip-hop wave, a group of newcomers pushing for innovations and new sonic formulas, inspiring all of us to think outside the box and create something new. Debuting last year, the talented rapper and producer can already boast a string of releases under his belt, even more impressive when compared to his young age: Johari is only sixteen. Nonetheless, he was able to put together a full-length original album, ‘Basquiat Dreams’, showcasing the whole extent of his artistry, both in lyricism and sound matter. Containing 7 tracks, the record is an intimate and meaningful journey into Turner’s life and influences, delivered to us in professional fashion.

‘Showtime’ opens the dances. We instantly get hit by a rather new concoction of sounds. Leaving 808 bass and trap bounces behind, Johari Turner utilizes a mellower production style, with various keys and synthesisers appearing on a simple beat background. We could describe it as a sort of old-school-yet-feels-fresh hip-hop. The Dallas resident possesses a fantastic vocal tone, always controlled, punchy and evocative. His flow is always marching at a steady pace, capable of modulating if the track needs it. ‘Checkmate’ is the perfect example of that. From here on, it’s a triumph: let yourself be immersed in Turner’s original artistry, raising the bar for what hip-hop means in his generation.

Overall, a great record from Johari, showcasing himself as a producer to watch out for. Recommended!
