We feel decisively lucky in being able to appreciate Joe Doonan’s music. The Leeds talent possesses the rare ability to provide escapism, giving the listener a fictional place to hide into. A place to soothe sorrows, or reflects on the future. Championing a stunningly poignant and relatable folk outlook, Doonan pursues music that’s easy on the ear, and heavy on the heart. The sonic matter is just wonderful, almost bucolic. Folk-pop arrangements, endless vocal harmonies, catchy hooks – Joe’s musicianship is extremely underrated, and we are confident peeps will recognize the majestic nature of the project very soon.
Lyrically, that’s where Doonan shines the most. Take the project’s latest single, ‘Jaybird’. Expressing all the musical qualities expressed above, the song focuses on exploring the aftermath of a relationship: emotions conflicting with each other, rage and pain constantly dancing together. Jay says it’s time to let go, in order to love again. We are confident the record will find fertile territories in larger audiences, there are a lot of broken hearts out there! ‘Jaybird’ also features Caitlin Jenkinson; Needless to say, the pair’s vocals are a match made in heaven.
On a mission to release five singles by the end of the year, Doonan seems to really be on the rise. Having been mentored by notable songwriters, it is clear that who we are dealing with is a future star, a clearly inspired and motivated creative that has incredible potential.
