It’s not our first rodeo covering HOT MUD. In fact, it’s hard to forget such a unique and purposeful project, an act of resilience and defiance that will likely inspire many like-minded listeners out there. Writing about ‘Rehab Rock’ back in 2024, we proudly celebrated HOT MUD as “the story of a man fighting his own demons, successfully turning his life around and using art as a cathartic tool for healing”. Since then, the Canadian creative has been hard at work, completing his ‘Revocery Records Trilogy’, three albums steeped in personal experience and meaningful lyricism. ‘Shiny Songs’ is the latest piece of that very same puzzle, out today.
It’s interesting to note how themes and production quality have evolved from album to album. If ‘Rehab Rock’ was chaotic and rowdy, ‘Shiny Songs’ is brighter, well-recorded and eclectic, a feature that mirrors HOT MUD’s own journey from addiction to healing. Leaving the past behind – yet never forgetting what he had to endure – the Ottawa-based singer and musician embraces a colourful brand of funk pop and electro rock, with further hints of post-punk and new wave making their way throughout the tracklist.
It’s a sizeable release too, with a whopping 21 songs showcasing the creative fertility behind the project. Delving deeper into ‘Shiny Songs’, HOT MUD explains: “It’s a celebration of music and of life. I have seen some serious shit and have miraculously made it out alive”. Transitioning from the dark side of human experience to a light-filled, joyful dimension, the Canadian talent tells a triumphal story of survival and change.
