It’s been nearly a year since ‘Keeping Things Sunny’, yet Higher Selves Playdate never truly stopped making music. Instead, they have been hiding in a writing room, penning an album that’s set to see the light of day on July 30th. Titled ‘The New Apocalyptic’, the record can be defined as an artistic reaction to the political and societal chaos around us, strongly pushing for a more positive outlook on the future. ‘Good Dreams’ is the first single taken from the upcoming record.
A witty, joyful and charming piece, ‘Good Dreams’ is the perfect match for such an eclectic project. Made up of musicians Jessica and Steve, the American duo champions what we would call holistic creativity. Fluent in visual art, non-profit work, and with a keen eye for contemporary philosophical and political discourse, Higher Selves Playdate conceive music making as an act of boldness rooted in reality, a way to practice pure, unfiltered self-expression that’s also meaningful and inspiring.
‘Good Dreams’ and ‘The New Apocalyptic’ do exactly that. Drenched in a quirky indie and alt-pop livery, they reveal a high degree of compositional expertise. Speaking about the album, Higher Selves Playdate explain: “It contemplates the current moment—one defined by war, fascism, malice, injustice, fear, secrecy, division, groupthink, and alienation. In response, it proposes doubling down on joy, play, togetherness, and love.”
