Haus of Sound Take a Fiercer Path in ‘Pain in my Eyes’

Toxic relationships have inspired a wealth of artistic work in the past few years, especially since the very same concept of a ‘toxic relationship’ rose to mainstream attention. It’s not a phenomenon confined to pop; in fact, one could argue that the explosive energy of heavier genres pairs very well with such a troubling subject matter. Seattle-based rock outfit Haus of Sound have experimented with that firsthand in ‘Pain in my Eyes’, delivering a nugget of intense reckoning and heartfelt grief that’s highly hypnotising and striking.

Guided by frontwoman Gabrielle Burton’s towering, stadium-ready vocals, ‘Pain in my Eyes’ frames personal reflections on a toxic relationship among a stream of distorted yet poised guitar tones, rolling drums, and a touch of modern synth-powered goodness. The result is another eclectic piece by the American group, following up from their debut effort ‘Anxiety’, a more uplifting, ska-flavoured episode.

Now delving into gloomier and rowdier territories, it’s clear that Haus of Sound are slowly refining their sound and finding their true vocation. Judging by what we have heard so far, we’d say that fierce guitars suit them very well. Speaking about ‘Pain in my Eyes’, the band explains: “It captures the emotional aftermath of a toxic relationship—the sleepless nights, the blurred memories, the addictive party haze used to mask the pain. But beneath the chaos lies a sense of clarity: the moment when grief gives way to numbness, and numbness gives way to freedom.”
