Serving a slice of the coolest French-inspired house music, Finlay appears on the scene as a talented young producer. Drawing inspiration from the classics – namely Groove Armada, Armand Van Helden and the Avalanches, among others – the British creative showcases his deeply rooted love for the genre; he’s done his research, and that’s a precious quality these days. ‘Waiting for you’ is the perfect evidence of that.
It’s a feel-good, uplifting anthem that doesn’t seek to reinvent the wheel. Rather, it celebrates it. Steeped in French touch and disco flavouring, ‘Waiting for you’ also sounds quite timeless, with a blend of soul-esque sampling and tekfunk synth work that feels familiar, yet still fresh and relevant. Originally written in July 2023, the track went through several production stages as Finlay set out to perfect it.
As we know it, there’s no such thing as true perfection; it’s easy to fall into a self-sabotaging cycle. Hence, Finlay felt it was time for ‘Waiting for you’ to see the light of day. As the London-based producer explains: “A rough draft of the song was originally made in about 10 minutes on my grandparents’ kitchen table. Since then, two years have passed, and so have many different drafts/ masters.”
