Finlay Birch Returns with Nostalgic Gem ‘I Want You’

Where one might have once found the trepidation of young love, now lies a more quaint reflection; the urgency has faded, but the romance is still there… this is Finlay Birch’s latest single, ‘I Want You’

The keen reader will gladly remember a recent interview with Scottish singer-songwriter Finlay Birch. Writing about ‘Weight Will Unwind’, we proudly celebrated “its aural simplicity… its tenderness, and its quiet confidence”, a statement that rings even more true today, as Birch unveils a new single, ‘I Want You’. Part of the puzzle that will eventually carry us to Finlay’s forthcoming album, the track embarks on an angelic acoustic journey, even more so than its predecessor.

You see, a simple guitar and light ethereal textures are the perfect match for Birch’s emotive lyricism. Steeped in introspection and emotional fervour, the single was originally written over eight years ago, when the now Isle of Mull-based creative was still living in Brighton. As one might imagine, a song called ‘I Want You’ would originally be penned with a certain intensity and purpose. By now, such urgency has faded, yet its core message still rings true, just processed through a more mature lens.

In that sense, the shift into ethereal, gentle territories is quite noticeable: where one might have once found the trepidation of young love, now lies a quaint reflection, one that translates in musical authenticity and honest nostalgia. Finlay Birch’s slow-moving vocals are the perfect match for such a heartwarming effort, taking listeners on an elegant, ballad-flavoured sonic journey.
