Aptly titled, ‘After Death’ evokes a sombre, haunting mood, a crepuscular, shadowy aural character boasting a strong hypnotic charge. In a way, the piece is not so much a song, in that it’s a whole listening experience, a cinematic, artsy product that connects melancholic literary work into triumphant and otherworldly musical goodness. Poem ‘After Death’ by Christina Rossetti serves as a thematic spark for the record, then treated to the Agnes Fred multidisciplinary aura.
A gifted musician as well as a fertile visual art connoisseur, Belgian songstress Agnes Fred could simply be considered a holistic creative, a human entity whose purpose lies in helping fellow humans delve deeper into their own consciousness, highlighting messages and feelings that might not be so obvious at first glance. Metaphors aside, there’s no doubt that the Brussels-based visionary is the real deal, as ‘After Death’ boldly showcases.
Known by day as Kris De Meester, the multidisciplinary creator explains: “This project is less about creating songs, and more about creating a space… Agnes Fred exists somewhere between a person and a memory, something that feels real, but can’t quite be located.” This is likely not going to be a record for everyone, as its fruition carries a certain introspective power, which could lie heavy on the heart. At the same time, it stands out as a refreshing, cathartic piece, one that we can fully lose ourselves in.
