There’s a rather unique story behind Earl Patrick’s latest album. A talented guitarist, singer and overall creative, Patrick champions a great deal of fingerstyle and Travis picking guitar mastery, building acoustic covers with a wholesome, authentic and evocative approach. ‘Smooth Runs The Water’ is the perfect example of that, an inspired album featuring ten songs sparking personal memories in Earl’s nuanced artistry.
It’s not all; Patrick had to overcome a great deal of difficulties in his life – that’s where the project’s uniqueness lies. Twenty years ago, he suffered a severe spinal cord injury when he dove into a wave and struck an unseen rock. Temporarily paralyzed, Earl had to relearn how to walk and play guitar, an endeavour that took time, resilience and determination. Today, he’s more creative than ever, with ‘Smooth Runs The Water’ marking an important milestone for the Portland-based artist.
Recorded in one take with no overdubs, the album was captured mostly at night, perhaps enhancing its intimate and cathartic character. Speaking about the inspiration behind ‘Smooth Runs The Water’, Patrick explains: “This is the music I first fell in love with as a kid. To this day, when I grab a guitar, these are the first songs I play. I wanted to make this record for so long, but I lost confidence in my playing after the accident.”
