Discovering ‘Yearnings of modern life’ has been a curious, eclectic experience. A lush and wholesome offering, the EP finds its unmistakable identity through Claudia Tomás’ nuanced artistry, here manifesting with a stunning blend of pop and jazz influences, all drenched in a soulful, elegant sonic livery. Featuring five wonderful pieces, ‘Yearnings of modern life’ explores the creases of modern civilisation, as it increasingly moves into the digital realm, far from our natural dimension.
Such a nuanced and meaningful ethos makes a lot of sense when compared to the way the EP was written. It’s rather organic, all performed by humans and with a certain creative flair. Tomás’ vulnerable, evocative vocals navigate such instrumental treasure with understated confidence and nostalgic honesty, making for a disarming, moving listening experience. The mood ranges from unfiltered melancholia (such as ‘I’ve seen you lose’) to neo-soul lenient fierceness (‘Gonna take a break’).
Claudia’s gentle tone is delivered with tenderness and uplifting flair, mirroring its recording style, which stays clean and pure, without overwhelming effects or production quirks over it. Once again, everything points towards simplicity and restraint, all qualities that have partly been forgotten in our fast-moving world. As Tomás explains: “The piece explores the human yearnings of contemporary life, in the context of a civilisation that keeps drifting further from its own human nature.”
‘Yearnings of modern life’ was recorded live at Alquimia Records (of sound engineer Jordi Tugores), with musicians Gori Matas (piano), Miquel Muntaner (guitar), Marko Lohikari (double bass), and Teo Salvà (drums).
