We featured Charlotte Grayson not long ago, proudly describing ‘Get Outta My Yard’ as “a bold, uplifting and fierce anthem”. We stand by our words: the British songstress champions an insanely fierce and potent vocal tone, often matched to equally fiery and striking lyricism. ‘Low Standards’ is Grayson’s latest effort, a piece that still maintains a certain affinity to its predecessor, yet ventures onto slightly mellower territories. Sharp distortions are still there, only with a more introspective outlook, delivered as always with a great deal of tongue-in-cheek fashion.
Balancing the project between indie rock, Americana and country influences, Charlotte Grayson is rather receptive to her band and the reality around her; writing about relationship troubles and the difficulty of connecting with a like-minded partner, the Hartlepool-based creative showcases herself as a bright, inspired entity, the kind of artist that’s fully in tune with the modern music landscape.
Speaking about the inspiration behind ‘Low Standards’, Grayson explains: “‘Low standards is about my terrible taste in men. On the plus side, I wouldn’t have released any albums without them, so you know, it’s not all a waste…”. Mark Aubrey does a wonderful job on the production, perfectly mirroring Charlotte’s evocative and rebellious vocal tone with the right amount of distortion and wholesome vintage recordings.
