Caratacus Drops Sci-Fi Concept Album ‘Church’

Acting as an instrumental concept album, ‘Church’ unveils the playful and complex eclecticism that guides Caratacus’s sonic exploration. An aural trip worth taking.

We are not ashamed to say that ‘Rat Catcher’ sort of hypnotised us, in that we started abstracting, we were taken aback by its cathartic, evocative charge. We were also expecting the track to have a groove with a triplet feel (especially given its ambient intro)… instead, we were given a chaotic rumble of sixteen notes. That gives us some good insights into Caratacus’ aural influences, as the kinetic elements of his latest album are clearly borrowed from electronica and leftfield territories. Acting as a melodic counterpoint, the many synth layers deliver a wide range of emotional intensity, ranging from melancholic soundscapes to playful videogame-esque tones.

Whichever way you might look at it, there’s no doubt about the artistic weight carried by ‘Church’. Marking Caratacus’s latest album, the record is an expansive hybrid of influences and references, with the American producer seemingly taken aback by sci-fi film soundtracks as well as eclectic outfits such as King Crimson and Gorillaz. A big cauldron of musical goodness, here used to build a highly personal and peculiar sonic journey.

Delving deeper into the unique ethos that guides his latest album, Caratacus explains: “It’s an instrumental electronic concept album about a cat wandering around on a space vessel, just watching events play out. I knew when I was putting it together that I wanted it to be some kind of sci-fi space story, but it didn’t really come together for me until I got the picture of my cat, Church, which I ended up using for the cover. It simplified everything for me, because Church is such a curious cat.”
