2026 is shaping up to be a pivotal comeback year for Danni Nicholls. Following up on her 2024 album ‘Under The Nee Plum Tree’, the talented singer-songwriter is gearing up for a brand new long-length release, ‘Making Moves’, a record that will see the light of day on June 26th via Astorama Records. For now, we are served two wholesome Americana-coded singles, ‘The Wreckage’ and ‘Carry On’, a striking sign of things to come.
We’ll focus on the former in this article, as we feel it carries a particularly crucial message. You see, the song was written during a period of profound change for Danni. Relocating from the UK to the US, Nicholls had to reckon with the many challenges and societal expectations that came with that move. From broken relationships to fragile mental health, ‘The Wreckage’ seeks to pay tribute to the liminal and brooding period between two life phases. The crepuscular neverland where one has to essentially build a new identity.
In a way, ‘The Wreckage’ is a powerful reminder of the complex and emotionally intensive implications of moving to another country. Basically, the hidden cost of emigration. Many will relate to Nicholls’ own experience, as she moved from the UK to the US: “Moving across the ocean had lots of consequences in my life. And for a second there, I thought that I may have made the wrong decision. I was self-doubting. Some things fell apart, and things got dark… I kept having this really strange out-of-body experience, and apparently, what I was experiencing is called dissociation.”
