Just beautiful. ‘Aftermath’ can simply be described as a nugget of tender, immersive goodness, a fragment of dreamlike euphoria guided by Athena Chioti’s soothing and elegant vocals. Accompanied by talented pianist Stefanos Kozanis, the Greek songstress gifts us a wonderful vocal performance, one that’s hard not to be hypnotised by. Originally composed in 2020 for the graphic novel Musicoma, ‘Aftermath’ explores “the spiritual and emotional depth of music as a form of connection and transformation”, as Chioti and Kozanis eloquently explain.
Mission accomplished: with a rather simple yet nuanced formula, the Athens-based creatives unleash a stream of healing and comforting sonic matter, with a sublime, warm grand piano marking the perfect counterpoint for Chioti’s heightened musicianship. Oscillating between classical influences and jazz harmony, ‘Aftermath’ is a unique effort, a record that’s bound to gain a large amount of admirers. At least, that’s what we would expect.
Recorded at Artracks Studios by Giorgos Priniotakis, the song is taken from the aforementioned Musicoma, a graphic novel written by Maria-Olia Dakogianni, with stunning lyrics written by longtime collaborator Karina. Delving deeper into its storyline, we are told: “The story follows the life of an ageing jazz diva who shows how an ‘old’ genre like jazz can still speak powerfully to younger generations — and how music can connect and transform lives.”
