The keen reader might recall American songster Alwyn Morrison. Debuting earlier this year with ‘The City’ – described by us as “effectively poising the cornerstone to a potentially bright career” – the New York-based creative and journalist really impressed us with his poignant, dynamic vocal tone and imaginative lyricism. Now, Morrison returns with another poignant, meaningful gem, ‘Chained’. There’s a lot to discover in it, but firstly, let us just say: it’s as lush and heartwarming as we were expecting, an elegant and wholesome nugget of unique pop prowess.
Wrapped in vibrant, organic instrumentation, ‘Chained’ finds its unique identity amongst shiny guitars and slow-paced grooves, the perfect match for Alwyn’s evocative, vivid vocals. Inspired by the singer’s personal experience, the song delves into the intricacies of loving someone affected by depression. As he explains: “It’s akin to being ‘in a dark room,’ and how that impacts my own life—never wanting to leave someone behind, which also keeps me ‘inside of a room.’ As much as I would do anything to cure that person, it’s beyond my control, and every attempt fails, leaving me helpless.”
It’s a rather important message, one that we are confident will resonate with a wide audience out there. Written by Morrison with friend Michael Ales, the record was then produced in LA by Michael Carey. Overall, ‘Chained’ confirms once again the depth of action championed by the American creative: not just pursuing trends and silly formulas, but instead expressing the ups and downs of real life through music.
