Aino Elina Serves Up Aural Dualism in ‘Kite/Thinning Ice’

We discovered Aino Elina only recently, and diving into her ethereal, dreamy aural universe has been rather hypnotising. Oscillating between hazy, mellow textures and more uplifting, cathartic anthems, the Edinburgh-based songstress seems to constantly navigate between her softer and fiercer sides, a dualism that’s now become an integral part of the project. ‘Kite/Thinning Ice’ is the perfect evidence of that.

A double album, ‘Kite/Thinning Ice’ marks Aino Elina’s debut full-length effort, crowning a towering career that’s been blooming upwards since 2017. Diving deeper into the record, we should note that ‘Kite’ was originally released in April, featuring the album’s more reflective and introspective episodes. Packed with liminal atmospheres and slow-moving alt-pop goodness, it provides a solid counterpoint to ‘Thinning Ice’s bolder, stronger character.

Shifting from alt-pop to deep-house and passing through leftfield territories, Elina’s latest effort showcases her potent, Robyn-esque influences, still maintaining the spacious shine and understated haziness that makes the project such a rare find. Originally from Lapland, Aino has also included a few tracks in Finnish, drawing a line to her roots and upbringing. ‘Faith in Fate’ is the album’s lead single, a club-oriented alt-pop gem with hints of aural nostalgia.
