Decrepit Youths Translate Chart-Topping Pop into Alt-Rock Euphoria in ‘Sound Of The Underground’

It’s been more than twenty years since Girls Aloud released their chart-topping hit ‘Sound Of The Underground’. It was about time we got an alt-rock version of it, don’t you think? Well, Newcastle-based guitar heroes Decrepit Youths do exactly that, catering to our needs rather perfectly. Their name hints at what you might find in their music: unapologetic distortions, hard-hitting, gritty choruses and an overall electric aura, making the project quite irresistible.

Certainly a large group – six members, including the two frontmen – Decrepit Youths rethink ‘Sound Of The Underground’ from the ground up (excuse the wordplay), swapping early ‘2000s break music and jungle beats with relentless alt-rock euphoria, giving the piece a slightly more melancholic, darker twist. We are not complaining; such a gloomy character perfectly fits Decrepit Youths. From a lyrical standpoint, what was once an innocent and bubbly piece takes on a reflective, maniacal livery, making for a riveting and magnetic listening experience.

Following up from July’s ‘Jump’, ‘Sound Of The Underground’ continues Decrepit Youths’ high-octane saga. Often seen infusing alt-rock and nu-metal into a cohesive, fresh formula, the British outfit has now showcased their ability to borrow from popular culture and look towards lighter territores, a feeling that’s probably ephemeral; Decrepit Youths will be back into their rowdy, explosive cave before you know it.
