It hasn’t been long since we wrote about MÆVEY. Celebrating ‘So Glad’ earlier in the summer, we proudly declared it as “moving with tenderness and passionate flair, taking listeners through a passionate lyrical journey”, a statement we fully stand behind. You see, the Welsh songstress’s wondrous and elegant vocals are highly hypnotic and lush, truly delivering a wholesome and charming aural experience. That’s also the reason why she became one of Baltic Jazz Recordings’ brightest diamonds.
Guided by Grammy-winning producer Steve Levine out of his Liverpool studio, the jazz imprint has long collaborated with MÆVEY, as the latest effort ‘Pull Me Out The Dark’ proudly showcases. If ‘So Glad’ develops as a slow-paced, sultry ballad, ‘Pull Me Out The Dark’ embraces a more uplifting and soulful direction, boasting an electrifying, expansive chorus and a magnetic horn section. The Welsh songstress’s nuanced vocals move with their silken, polished character, embodying a class and grace that’s rather nostalgic and timeless.
Known by day as Maeve Bluebell Wells, the Liverpool-based creative also features in bilingual dance group BlueBelle. It’s clear that she’s a highly trained musician, comfortable in a variety of settings. Yet, ‘Pull Me Out The Dark’ offers us a version of MÆVEY that’s vintage and velvety, truly hypnotising even the most apathetic of listeners.
