We were busy writing about Catherine Elms just over a month ago, celebrating ‘Medusa’ as “a sultry, euphoric yet decadent number”. Now, the Welsh creative returns with another chilling, shadowy episode, ‘Brutal Heart’, a slice of alt-rock goodness drenched in Elms’ eerie and macabre artistic universe. Catherine’s aesthetic is – as mentioned – quite gothic, rich in horror-esque references and alternative imagery. Yet, even in the darkness, the British hero finds her way to light, exploding into a fierce, anthemic banger that’s as potent as they come.
Steeped in introspective, hypnotic character, ‘Brutal Heart’ navigates the darkest corners of human consciousness, searching for dystopian and destructive desires that a person might struggle to reconcile with. Elms let her intrusive thoughts win, accepting and openly embracing the primordial dualism between light and darkness. Such a striking lyrical theme is also informing Catherine’s wider album, expected later this year.
Speaking more in depth about the single, the Swansea-based powerhouse explains: “This song is about the painful realisation that our heart’s desires can be both beautiful and destructive. It’s a reflection on making peace with those contradictions and the mistakes they lead to, embracing them as part of who we are.”
