Wotts Kickstarts a New Creative Era with ‘swim song’

Now a solo project, Wotts jumps into the unknown with ‘swim song’, effectively starting a new creative chapter. The outcome is, not surprisingly, incredibly positive.

The attentive reader will remember a big change involving Canadian outfit Wotts. Historically a duo, the project is now going ahead as a solo endeavour, with producer and singer Jayem at its helm. We had been waiting for new music since May, and just a few days ago, the Ottawa-based musician unveiled ‘swim song’, a record that kickstarts the Wotts saga all over again.

Inspired by the likes of Magdalena Bay and Tame Impala, ‘swim song’ gently distances itself from Wotts’ past catalogue, now oscillating between euphoric poppier melodies and a fashionable alternative sheen. There’s a ton more of electronica, although sporadic fuzzy guitar tones still find their way to the listeners. Overall, ‘swim song’ is strongly eclectic, with moments of dreaminess and psychedelia sprinkled throughout it.

From a lyrical standpoint, Jayem strikes a balance between playfulness and evocative charge, writing a song that will likely be relatable to most out there. As the Canadian talent explains: “It’s about that split second where you decide to go for it. You put yourself out there knowing you could get hurt, or nothing could come of it at all, but you make the jump anyway.” Basically, jumping into the unknown, something that Wotts himself does with this release. The outcome is, not surprisingly, incredibly positive.
