WOOF Returns with Fierce Darkwave Piece ‘LICK!’

WOOF’s gloomy and cathartic darkwave had already reached us a few months ago. Yet, we were craving for more fashionable darkness, so much so that we went and scooped out the American musician’s latest effort, ‘LICK!’. In it, we are confronted with a well-tested, effective formula. Tight basslines, noisy distortions and robotic, understated drums, a stream of post-punk goodness that morphs into grainy darkwave and hints of soviet euphoria.

Of course, WOOF hails from Chicago and doesn’t have a lot to spare with anything Eastern European. Even then, we’d argue that some of his references point to eclectic territories, a quality that greatly enriches the project’s striking outlook. Punk is perhaps always on WOOF’s mind too: next to the deep melancholia and lo-fi vocals, there’s also a certain rebellious character, one that solidifies into slick guitar riffs and underground euphoria – a tension we would codify as Mareux vs Molchat Doma.

Delving into the record, the American creative explains: “It’s inspired by the energy of late-night city vibes, dancing between chaos and control.” Evoking a cutthroat, vicious listening experience, ‘LICK!’ is both futuristic and nostalgic – in fact, it exists in a space that’s strictly its own. A parallel dimension where WOOF is in complete artistic control.
