We have been following WOOF for a while. In fact, the keen reader might remember the American creative from a single we featured earlier this year, ‘LICK’. At the time, we celebrated it as “a stream of post-punk goodness that morphs into grainy darkwave and hints of soviet euphoria”, a statement that mostly rings true even today. ‘Bedtime Story’ is partly loyal to that very same ethos, perhaps embracing a less gloomy allure and doubling down on the project’s post-punk origins.
Setting itself up as a prophetic, educational tale, ‘Bedtime Story’ embraces authenticity and independence, sharing a message of personal resilience and uncomfortable change. Such crucial songwriting is delivered in true WOOF’s style, with the Chicago-based artist soaking his vocals in lo-fi allure and fuzzy distortions. That’s what makes the record such a moody and haunting piece, a record that feels niche and leftfield, yet also familiar and relatable.
Delving deeper into the song, WOOF explains: “It’s a reminder that sometimes the stories we hold closest are the ones we need to let go of, even if they leave scars.” Overall, ‘Bedtime Story’ is a surprisingly vibrant and electrifying effort, especially thanks to its nocturne, nostalgic production and the fast-paced post-punk grooves. WOOF is really starting to emerge as a prominent figure in the genre.
