Despite that, it’s 2026, we are in Berlin, and the talented producer behind WELTSCHMERZ is busy unveiling ‘Refugium’, a four-track EP that punches above its weight.
We wouldn’t define ‘Refugium’ as merely a collection of moody beats. It deserves more; it deserves recognition as the piece of nostalgic art it is. Channelling hip-hop influences from another era, the EP unveils a listening experience that’s highly emotional and packed with escapism, as well as offering a peek into a lost decade… yet, not so lost after all. Soulful samples, vinyl scratches and groovy beats are all part of the hypnotic sonic canvas.
Delving deeper into the theming that propels the record, WELTSCHMERZ explains: “‘Refugium’ is the title track and closing piece of a four-track EP exploring themes of distance, stillness and stepping away from the noise. ‘Beyond Noise’, ‘Missing Out’ and ‘Still Life’ form a cohesive set of instrumental tracks centred around retreat, perspective and finding space away from constant distraction.” We appreciate the synchronicity between such themes and the production material, a signal that the German creative is making music with purpose and meaning.
