We Were Young Embrace Nostalgia in Bright, Uplifting Anthem ‘Rewind’

There’s a certain dualism in We Were Young’s music. You’ve got your hard-hitting and monumental alt-rock component, with its anthemic choruses and charged guitar riffs, coexisting with a brighter electronic layer, a triumph of euphoric synth motifs with a hidden nostalgic twist. It’s a formula that seems to be working, as it perfectly caters to the chaotic rock crowd and the carefree, poppier folks. Yet, we urge you to see WWY as a monolith: they are who they are, with ambivalence being a foundational part of their musical character.

‘Rewind’ is the perfect example of that. Marking the group’s sixth release to date, the track carries a strong hypnotising flair, with rolling, fast-paced drums providing the cornerstone for an uplifting, evocative and potent listening experience. Imagine the shaking quality of alt-rock with pop’s relatable factor. It’s a record that stays with you for a while. Props must be given to We Were Young’s lead vocals, the perfect blend between lyrical catharsis and bold, fierce delivery.

Delving deeper into the song, the Kent-based pair explains: “Hitting the 40s has a profound effect on self-reflection and looking back on all the things you have achieved, not achieved and wished you had achieved, so ‘Rewind’ was our way of reflecting on their past and reminiscing on the good times and what life was back then.”
