Waterflower Returns with Cathartic and Meaningful Piece ‘Būrī’

The keen reader will gladly remember Latvian creative, musician and producer Waterflower. After chatting with her a few weeks ago, we can safely say she’s the real deal, a nuanced human being fully committed to artistic authenticity and sonic research. ‘Būrī’ reiterates that very same concept, delivering a haunting and eerie piece steeped in transformation and survival. Extremely cathartic and sui generis, the record ships with a stunning music video, defined as ‘Lynchian’ by Waterflower herself.

Directed and choreographed by Ri Shirotsuki, the visuals for ‘Būrī’ signal “a haunting journey through times of entrapment, transformation, and survival”, lining up a series of metaphorical imagery that feels magnificent yet intricate and unsettling. Such sensations well mirror the record’s meaningful, deep message, further interpreted by Vencheska Baltique, a renowned drag artist and non-binary performer. She embodies the Child/Snake, “whose journey from innocence to survival mirrors the song’s core message” – as Waterflower so eloquently explains.

‘Būrī’ is also the name of an overarching EP featuring two more records. The title track benefits from the contribution of NAAVE and his rap vocals, and Hilke’s mystical cello carpets. Overall, the single is a masterpiece, one that needs time to be absorbed and fully understood by the listener. This is pure, unfiltered personal expression, music in its truest form.
