‘Back to Life’ is certainly an inspiring single. Hard-hitting from both a lyrical and sonic level, the record showcases the nuanced and expert musicianship enjoyed by drummer, vocalist and producer Svend Skogheim and guitarist, multi-instrumentalist and producer Tage Johnsen. Hailing from Norway, the pair enjoys a successful career in the local music scene, and they are now teaming up under the Vatnehall moniker. The results of such collaboration are striking.
‘Back to Life’ is the perfect evidence of it. Oscillating between heavy metal and anthemic pop, the record is relatable and catchy, yet also furious and uplifting, especially with its fierce drum grooves and sharp, eclectic guitar bits. The collective vocals are the highlight of it, transforming what’s a regular track into a majestic and cinematic call for action. Precisely, ‘Back to Life’ seeks to reassure listeners that mental health struggles can be overcome – if one is willing to put in the work.
Inspired by one of Vatnehall’s friends, the song “depicts a young woman who has been written off by society. Despite her cries for help, she is brushed off and ignored at every turn. But despite her troubles, she manages to continually overcome the odds” – as the Norwegian creatives eloquently explain.
