The keen reader might recall a feature we published about Trevy James earlier this year, where we celebrated the American musician with a great deal of positive words. “It turns out, James is somewhat of a shapeshifter, artistically speaking. Comfortable amidst soulful, jazz-flavoured vibes as he is among reggae and R&B territories, Trevy is first and foremost a wonderful musician and singer”, we proudly declared. We stand by our statement, as ‘Grey In The Beard’ confirms our suspicions about the project.
James’ latest album, ‘Grey In The Beard’ is a luscious, elegant and eclectic body of work, the perfect evidence of how reggae can adapt to multiple contexts and influences. You’ve got your soulful piece, such as ‘If I Get The Chance’, next to more conventional nuggets of roots reggae, such as ‘Grey In The Beard’ and ‘No Doubt In My Mind’. ‘Forever’ showcases Trey James’ jazz-flavoured side, still maintaining a high degree of eclecticism and elegance. Praise must be given to James’ vocals too, quite malleable and expressive, always precise.
Delving deeper into the album, James explains: “This album is my most complete artistic statement to date. It took time to consolidate all of my different musical roles, influences, and visions into the style I was meant to create. My 2018 EP and 2020 LP were about taking the reins of my own life within music and never giving up on my dreams.”
