Brooding and haunting, ‘Conman’ carries a heightened cinematic quality, a feature that’s very common in Tori Lord’s triumphant and anthemic catalogue. Crafting luscious, crepuscular pop with a heightened lyrical component, the Canadian-born, New York City-based songstress ventures into the depths of human behaviours, often drawing from personal experience and introspective territories. ‘Conman’ is the perfect evidence of that, an elegant, sombre pop cut exploring the many ways people can fool each other.
On this occasion, the single is a rather personal affair for Tori Lord. As she explains: “It’s not about being fooled. It’s about recognising the pattern. I saw it in my own relationship, and then I watched it play out again, just with a different cast.” Walking the fine line between gaslighting and deception, the song echoes an instance of a person not being who they said they were. It’s a cognitive dissonance that’s not always obvious or noticeable, but that manifests itself over time.
‘Conman’ moves the needle and the timeline towards a forthcoming debut EP. Judging by what we can hear now, we are confident we’ll be faced with the most emotional and wholesome pop matter. Lord’s vocals are equally magnificent, truly malleable and poignant.
