We have been admiring Sasha Joy for quite some time, and we are excited to see her back with a brand new offering. ‘Got You Something’ marks the London-based songstress’s latest effort, a soulful and eclectic pop tune with a great deal of funk allure in it. The single has been recoded with a live band, without excessive use of modern production polish. This gives the track a heightened, charming, and wholesome allure, allowing us to fully connect with Joy’s evocative, malleable vocals.
Once again, Sasha teams up with producer Sanga Toto, helping the record achieve its maximum potential. Compared to the pair’s previous release, ‘To Stay’, ‘Got You Something’ embraces a more nostalgic, timeless arrangement, partly the product of a specific production choice, favouring analogue gear and real instruments over digital techniques. Sasha Joy’s songwriting here is particularly catchy and laidback, especially during the choruses; a true earworm.
From a lyrical standpoint, ‘Got You Something’ feels meaningful and purposeful. In fact, it carries a certain dualism, with its uplifting and electrifying aural facade hiding a more reflective and philosophical core. As we are told, the song “explores a powerful human paradox: the realisation that even in moments of loss, life leaves us with something essential to take with us.” We suspect that such a crucial and empowering message will connect with a wide audience out there.
