We are certainly not new to The7thGatekeeper’s eclectic, haunting allure. Driving a committed and rather dark artistic project, the Welsh musician and composer borrows from a variety of sources – mainly grunge and metal-related – to then pen material that’s hard-hitting and striking, often heavily distorted, sometimes more reflective and gloomy. If ‘The Hoard’ was a “slice of alt-rock euphoria and fierce distortions”, as we described it earlier this year, latest effort ‘You Are My Sunshine’ embraces a more decadent, slow-burning character.
Introduced by a melancholic, minimalistic intro, ‘You Are My Sunshine’ first presents The7thGatekeeper’s raw, jagged vocals and a haunting, gentle guitar, tricking us all into believing it could be a ballad. Partly, it could definitely be: tempos are slower, and the track does develop with sacred reverence. Yet, towards the end, it all explodes into a metal-esque epic finale. Self-produced by The7thGatekeeper himself, ‘You Are My Sunshine’ is a rather complex and mature offering, a sign that the British musician is growing after each release.
Delving deeper into the record, The7thGatekeeper explains: “I like the duality of it. A friend and mentor, Romesh Dodangoda, who mastered this record for me, said that for him it highlighted the darkness and light that everyone experiences inside.”
