The Vacant Shapes Serve Up a Cracker With ‘Ghosts of Sunflowers’

‘Ghosts of Sunflowers’ is the immersive new single from The Vacant Shapes, a three-piece alternative-rock act hailing from the Golden State of California. Blending elements of post-punk, 80s alternative, and 60s garage, The Vacant Shapes are truly a tough act to pin down genre-wise. So let’s just not! Let’s just enjoy the eerie and minimalist guitar work of Rico Shackelford, the thumping and energetic drumming of Gregg Gross, and the bouncing, gritty bass courtesy of Rob Ochoa. With Shackelford also on vocals, he’s a man who gives off a Paul Banks (Interpol), Ian Curtis (Joy Division) sort of vibe. It works wonders with the backing soundscape.

In true indie-rock form, The Vacant Shapes have created their own label called ‘Thick Honey Records’. “Releasing music ourselves under our own label gives us more freedom to release whatever, whenever,” says Shackelford. “Producing and creating the art ourselves only comes naturally”.

The band have promised that ‘Ghosts of Sunflowers’ is the first of many singles that they’ll be releasing throughout the rest of 2022 and 2023. We hope they keep to that promise, as more music from them can only lead to good things!
