Perhaps it’s just us, but we have been feeling quite bored by what’s coming out of the airwaves recently. You know, everyone’s trying to catch a trend or go viral, and overall, there’s less willingness to divert from the beaten path. That’s why we were rather happy to come across The Stolen Moans. The keen reader might be familiar with the project as we have covered it before; this time, though, it’s different. The Los Angeles/Dublin-based outfit is making a big statement with their debut album ‘Elbows Don’t Have Eyes’, out now.
Packing thirteen punk-oriented pieces, the album is relentless in its furious energy, playful tone and hard-hitting lyricism, a formula that’s frankly irresistible. Oscillating between hazy distortions and a certain No Doubt-esque flair, ‘Elbows Don’t Have Eyes’ greatly benefits from the group’s over-achieving lyricism, jumping with both feet into meaningful territories. Writing about “workplace misogyny, feline kings, romantic yearning disguised as debate, anarchist art manifestos” and more, the record is extremely contemporary and observant, describing our flawed reality in a whimsical, fun manner.
The contrast between uplifting and rebellious punk energy and the societal-driven lyricism is what makes the band such a daring, bold project. Simply, The Stolen Moans are carving their own space in a saturated industry, and we suspect they’ll rally a great deal of support in no time. Out now via Compact Egg Machine, ‘Elbows Don’t Have Eyes’ also includes a “limited CD booklet edition, limited zine edition”, which you can get on Bandcamp.
