The Side Effect Rejoice in Jungly Guitars in Latest Effort ‘Break Out’

What particularly stands out in ‘Break Out’ is the timeless nature of the aural matter. Navigating jangly rock’n’roll and power-pop territories, New York City-based outfit The Side Effect embark on a wholesome, nostalgic journey across fuzzy guitars and evocative lyricism, making for a sound that’s certainly quite retro, yet still inexplicably relevant. Framed into a short, impactful package, ‘Break Out’ develops over little more than two minutes, offering a bite-sized, electrifying listening experience that showcases the songwriting talent of the American group.

Fronted by long-time friends Jay Wilkins, Chris Flood, and Phil Yanos, The Side Effect are children of the 80s, establishing themselves as talented musicians in 90s New York. Those were the times, they’d tell us, “leading, co-fronting, or writing with bands in the Lower East Side’s busy alternative music scene, working with and paying homage to those sounds in their own way…”. Such a bold, creative flair is still there, yet it’s now drenched in the sort of maturity and expertise that adult life brings along.

‘Break Out’ is the perfect evidence of that, with its playful ethos and retro energy. There’s something for everyone in there: from the jungly guitars to the relatable songwriting, the record is another successful chapter in The Side Effect’s longstanding history. The single is taken from the overarching EP ‘Poisoned By the Sunshine’.
